The Justice Department’s Weaponization Working Group has intensified its calls for New York Attorney General Letitia James to resign as federal investigations into potential mortgage fraud heat up.
Special prosecutor Ed Martin, who heads the group, wrote a letter on August 12 urging James to step down, citing the ongoing investigation into alleged discrepancies with her real estate dealings.
The probe is centered around two properties: James’ Brooklyn townhouse and a Virginia property she purchased in 2023. The allegations suggest that James misrepresented the details of these properties in order to secure favorable loans.

During Martin's visit to James’ Brooklyn property, he observed the structure's doorbell setup, which added another layer of intrigue to the investigation. The main entrance featured a single doorbell, while a side entrance had four additional doorbells labeled “1 Floor,” “2 Floor,” “3A,” and “3B.”
This arrangement raised suspicions that the property may have been used as a multi-unit dwelling, further complicating the narrative that James had misclassified the property on her mortgage applications.
In addition to the Brooklyn townhouse, James is facing scrutiny over her Norfolk property, which was purchased in 2023. Allegations suggest that she falsely claimed the property would serve as her primary residence while she continued to serve as New York’s attorney general.
