Earning America the Right Way, Legal Immigrants

How Trump has already changed immigration policy | PBS News

On this Fourth of July, while fireworks lit up the skies from coast to coast and millions celebrated their American identity with pride, another powerful story unfolded in quieter, more personal spaces — the story of legal immigrants who earned the right to be Americans the hard way.

Among them are families like that of an Indian-born woman who came to this country with little more than hope, resolve, and the unshakable belief that the American Dream must be pursued, not handed out.

Her story, though personal, echoes the growing chorus of legal immigrants who are turning to President Donald Trump — not out of partisanship, but out of principle. Because for them, the path to America was marked by rules, sacrifice, and allegiance, not shortcuts, lawlessness, or entitlement.

Her father had been a naval officer in India, proud of his service and rooted in tradition. Yet he gave up everything — his rank, security, and homeland — not for handouts, but for a better future built on freedom and merit.

He scrubbed toilets and worked graveyard shifts, never once complaining. There were no demands for welfare or shortcuts to prosperity. There was only work — honest, humble work.

He moved his family into a shared household with relatives, learned English, and embraced American life, never asking the country to bend its values for him. In return, he asked only one thing: a chance.

This family didn’t sneak across borders or abuse asylum claims. They filled out the paperwork. Paid the fees. Waited patiently for interviews. Passed tests. Swore the oath.

Assimilated. Earned every step of the journey toward citizenship. And when they finally received that blue passport, they knew it wasn’t just a document — it was a sacred contract. It meant something. It still does.

And yet today, the American Dream is under assault by those who treat citizenship like a political prize to be handed out rather than a privilege to be earned.

President Donald Trump, and those who support him, see clearly what many in the ruling elite refuse to acknowledge: the value of legal immigration is being diluted by unchecked illegal entry, political gamesmanship, and ideological madness. The American people — including millions of legal immigrants — are tired of it.

The modern Democratic Party, once a supporter of border security and law and order, now openly champions policies that blur the line between legal and illegal immigration. Sanctuary cities harbor fugitives.

Open-border policies allow drug cartels, traffickers, and unvetted foreign nationals to cross into the U.S. with impunity. And progressive voices in the media suggest that anyone who opposes this lawlessness is bigoted or un-American. But it’s not bigotry to demand law and order — it’s common sense. And legal immigrants know this better than anyone.

President Trump’s message — secure the border, uphold the law, and put American citizens first — resonates deeply with those who earned their place in the country.

In 2016, he secured 36% of the legal immigrant vote. By 2024, that number surged to 47%. These are not empty statistics. They are evidence of a shift — a realignment of working-class, rule-following immigrants who reject the chaos and disrespect fostered by the left’s reckless immigration policies.

For legal immigrants, the betrayal is deeply personal. They stood in line, sometimes for years. They underwent background checks, medical exams, and civics tests.

Many came from nations plagued by corruption and instability, and they chose America because of its rules — not despite them. They didn’t come here to watch those rules be shredded in front of them.

The contrast is staggering. On one hand, icons like Albert Einstein, Elon Musk, and Madeleine Albright — all legal immigrants who changed America with their minds, drive, and devotion.

On the other, individuals like Victor Martínez Hernández, who entered illegally and went on to murder Rachel Morin. Or Lina Maria Orovio Hernandez, who scammed over $400,000 in taxpayer funds and illegally voted in the 2024 election. These are not minor infractions. They are felonies. They are crimes that betray both American citizens and legal immigrants alike.

Every illegal entry is a slap in the face to those who played by the rules. Every expedited citizenship offer to an illegal entrant devalues the commitment of every legal immigrant who studied for years and sacrificed to gain entry.

The narrative that “they’re just here to work” is not a defense — it’s an excuse. Motives do not negate laws. Wanting a better life doesn’t mean one gets to ignore the system that others respected.

President Trump has consistently spoken for the people the media ignores: the law-abiding majority. His push for a secure border, E-Verify, interior enforcement, and a merit-based immigration system are not attacks on immigrants — they are defenses of immigration done the right way.

Under his policies, America can remain a beacon of hope for those who earn their way in — not a dumping ground for criminals, traffickers, and foreign actors who exploit loopholes.

The current border crisis is more than a policy failure. It’s a humanitarian disaster and a national security threat. Under Biden-era policies, the southern border has seen an influx of unvetted migrants from regions including China, Iran, and the Middle East — many of them young, single men of military age.

Cartels have capitalized on lax enforcement, raking in billions by trafficking children and women through treacherous routes where rape, extortion, and abandonment are commonplace.

Meanwhile, legal immigrants, working-class Americans, and veterans struggle to access overcrowded hospitals, underfunded schools, and affordable housing. The resources are being stretched thin, not to help citizens, but to accommodate those who broke the law. That’s not fairness. That’s betrayal.

The price of illegal immigration is paid not just in dollars, but in dignity. When politicians reward illegal behavior with drivers' licenses, voting rights, and taxpayer-funded benefits, they send a clear message: laws are optional, and those who follow them are fools.

That message erodes the very core of what America represents — a land of opportunity, yes, but one that demands respect, order, and duty.

The rise of equity-based rhetoric has done further damage. In the name of compassion, we are building a two-tiered system — one where illegal entrants receive incentives while legal immigrants are treated as second-class citizens. When cities spend millions housing illegal migrants in hotels, while homeless veterans sleep on sidewalks, the moral compass has gone haywire.

But this Independence Day, there is hope. More legal immigrants are waking up, speaking out, and rejecting the false promises of the left. They are rallying behind leaders like Trump who recognize their value, respect their sacrifice, and pledge to protect what they earned.

Being an American isn’t just a status — it’s a commitment. It’s a willingness to defend the Constitution, embrace the culture, speak the language, and contribute more than one takes.

Legal immigrants understand this better than anyone. They don’t want America to become like the countries they fled. They want America to stay exceptional — to stay strong, sovereign, and principled.

The Indian-born immigrant who rose from modest beginnings to become a national security advisor and Ohio’s first female sports agent didn’t do so because she broke the law.

She did it because she believed in the system. She earned every step. And now, she’s fighting to ensure that system isn’t destroyed by those who would trade order for chaos, merit for politics, and laws for votes.

Trump stands with people like her — people who worked for their place. He knows the difference between immigration and invasion. Between earning and demanding. Between building America and bleeding it. That’s why legal immigrants are standing with him.

This Independence Day, Americans must remember: freedom isn’t free, and citizenship isn’t either. They must be defended. They must be earned. And those who earned them the right way — through paperwork, patience, and patriotism — must not be forgotten.

To every legal immigrant who followed the law, waited their turn, and became an American in heart, mind, and soul — this country sees you. This country needs you. And this country is worth protecting. You are not a footnote. You are the backbone.

And thanks to leaders like President Donald J. Trump, your legacy won’t be erased. It will be honored. Loudly. Proudly. And legally.
