Vivian Jenna Wilson, the eldest daughter of Elon Musk, has publicly condemned her father’s actions, calling out his behavior at rallies and his influence within the Trump administration. In a new interview with Teen Vogue, her second since publicly distancing herself from Musk last year, Wilson voiced her strong disapproval of Musk’s actions, particularly his gesture at rallies, which she described as “definitely a Nazi salute.”
Wilson, who is 20 years old and currently a student in Tokyo, took issue with her father’s actions, specifically in relation to his stance on issues affecting the transgender community. She pointed to Musk’s behavior in January at two rallies where he made a gesture she believes resembled a Nazi salute.
“The Nazi salute shit was insane. Honey, we’re going to call a fig a fig, and we’re going to call a Nazi salute what it was,” she said. “That shit was definitely a Nazi salute.”
This bold statement marks another chapter in Wilson’s public rejection of her father, who has made numerous controversial remarks over the years. Musk’s comments about Wilson’s gender transition have garnered widespread attention, and Wilson has consistently criticized him for his views and treatment of her.
Wilson gained media attention in 2021 when Musk discussed her in a podcast, claiming that he had been “tricked” into signing documents that allowed her to receive gender-affirming medical treatment. Musk made the comment in a broader context of attacking what he called the “woke mind virus.” He went so far as to say that he had “lost his son” due to her gender transition, a statement that deeply upset Wilson.
“The reason they call it ‘deadnaming’ is because your son is dead,” Musk had said. This comment was particularly painful for Wilson, who later responded by saying her father’s absence from her life and his harsh criticism of her identity only deepened her resolve to speak out for trans rights.
In a 2022 legal case, Wilson petitioned to remove “Musk” from her name, stating that she no longer wished to be associated with her biological father in any form. She described Musk as “cold,” “uncaring,” and “narcissistic,” and recalled how he had often been cruel toward her for showing feminine traits during her childhood.
“He’s very quick to anger. He is uncaring and narcissistic,” she said in an interview with NBC News.
Wilson’s journey has been deeply affected by the lack of support from her father. She shared how her struggles with her identity led to emotional breakdowns in school, and how transitioning was vital for her mental health.
“I was constantly having mental breakdowns in the middle of class. I could not get through days. I didn’t want to wake up, I didn’t want to do anything. I just wanted to rot, pretty much. It was like, I cannot do this,” she explained.
She emphasized that without receiving gender-affirming care, she felt she would have been led down a very destructive path.
Currently living in Tokyo, Wilson is dedicated to advocating for trans rights, especially for minors. She explained that as someone who transitioned at a young age, she feels a responsibility to speak out about the importance of gender-affirming care for young people.
“There’s so much villainization of that, and I would really like to raise awareness of the fact that trans care for minors, especially puberty blockers, is really important,” she said. She called on society to stop demonizing trans children and those who are helping them feel comfortable in their skin.
Wilson’s advocacy comes at a time when the transgender community is facing increased attacks from conservatives, particularly through legislation. Former President Donald Trump, during his time in office, signed several executive orders that restricted the rights of transgender individuals, including a ban on transgender people serving in the military and a ban on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
However, a federal judge recently blocked Trump’s military ban, marking a small victory for the trans community.
“I am terrified of losing access to guaranteed medical care. If I didn’t medically transition at the age I did, I don’t know what would’ve happened,” Wilson said, underscoring the importance of accessible medical care for trans individuals.
She also revealed that her mother, Justine Musk, who was Musk’s first wife, had been supportive of her transition and has continued to be a positive influence in her life.
When asked about her relationship with her father and siblings, Wilson admitted that she doesn’t know how many siblings she has, given the complexity of Musk’s family. Musk has 14 children with four different women, and Wilson said she doesn’t keep up with his side of the family.
Despite Musk’s wealth and influence, Wilson emphasized that he doesn’t play a significant role in her life.
“People thrive off of fear. I’m not giving anyone that space in my mind,” she said, explaining that she doesn’t allow Musk’s actions to dominate her thoughts.
“The only thing that gets to live free in my mind are drag queens,” she added with a lighthearted remark, highlighting her personal commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
While Musk continues to wield significant influence in the Trump administration and remains a billionaire tech mogul, Wilson has distanced herself from his ideological and political views. Her strong advocacy for trans rights and her candid criticism of her father serve as a stark contrast to Musk’s public persona and actions.
Vivian Jenna Wilson’s voice continues to be an important one in the fight for trans rights, especially as she speaks out against the harmful rhetoric and policies targeting the trans community. As she continues her education and advocacy work in Tokyo, her story is one of resilience and determination to live authentically despite the challenges posed by her father’s public remarks and the political climate surrounding transgender issues.
