ICE Shuts Down LA Mayor Karen Bass After Exposing Major Lies Over Immigration Raids and Sanctuary Policies

LA Mayor addresses ongoing ICE raids: 'This has created a sense of fear and terror in our city'

In a dramatic escalation of the battle over immigration enforcement and sanctuary policies, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials have directly contradicted Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, exposing what critics are calling a “blatant pattern of misinformation” surrounding recent high-profile raids in Southern California.

The clash between federal authorities and the city’s leadership has sparked a firestorm across the nation and reinvigorated the debate over the role of local governments in obstructing federal immigration laws.

At the center of the controversy is a recent ICE operation that targeted multiple suspected illegal grow operations and trafficking networks across Southern California.

The raids—designed to dismantle human trafficking rings and illicit businesses employing undocumented labor—led to several arrests, including individuals involved in child labor and drug distribution.

While ICE touted the mission as a success, LA Mayor Karen Bass took to the airwaves and social media to denounce the raids as “terrorizing,” “reckless,” and “based on racial profiling.”

Bass went further, stating publicly that city agencies had not been informed of ICE’s operations and that the federal agency was violating trust by conducting these missions in sanctuary cities like Los Angeles.

She accused ICE of targeting “vulnerable immigrant communities” and of engaging in “right-wing stunts” designed to provoke fear rather than serve justice.

But ICE didn’t stay silent. Within 48 hours, agency officials released a bombshell rebuttal. In a detailed public memo, ICE laid out the timeline of the raids, the criminal networks they disrupted, and—most damningly—provided evidence that Bass’s office had been notified ahead of time and declined to cooperate.

ICE further accused the mayor of “deliberate misrepresentation” in an attempt to score political points and shield criminal activity under the banner of immigrant protection.

The ICE memo, signed by Regional Enforcement Director Matthew Ramirez, was blunt. “Despite public claims to the contrary, Mayor Bass’s office and relevant city departments were given advanced notice of enforcement operations within Los Angeles city limits.

The administration opted not to provide assistance or support, and furthermore failed to notify local first responders of potential safety risks tied to cartel-linked operations.”

Ramirez added, “Our agents risked their lives raiding multiple locations involved in human trafficking, child labor abuse, and the illegal distribution of narcotics.

These were not innocent family homes — they were criminal enterprises. It is disheartening and dangerous when political leaders mischaracterize our efforts and protect those breaking federal law.”

Included in the ICE release were redacted copies of emails, briefing schedules, and internal correspondence showing that Bass’s office was invited to participate in a joint task force months before the operation.

In one email dated May 4, 2025, a liaison from the Department of Homeland Security asked city officials to coordinate on “suspected trafficking and labor violations in marijuana grow sites known to intersect with gang activity and child exploitation.” There was no response.

Within hours of the ICE memo becoming public, conservative lawmakers and commentators erupted with criticism. “Mayor Karen Bass has been caught red-handed lying to the public to protect her woke agenda,” said Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA). “She knew about the raids, did nothing to help, then lied about it afterward.”

Despite the mounting evidence, Mayor Bass has doubled down on her narrative. In a press conference following ICE’s release, she stated, “We do not support ICE’s tactics, regardless of prior communication. Our position remains firm — Los Angeles is a sanctuary city. We do not collaborate in operations that instill fear in our communities.”

When asked about the emails, Bass responded vaguely, claiming she “hadn’t reviewed every piece of communication” and suggested that any notice from ICE would have been routed to “irrelevant” departments not involved in public safety. Critics say this is just another deflection.

“She’s playing semantics while ICE is protecting children and dismantling drug operations,” said conservative analyst Buck Sexton. “This is what sanctuary politics look like in practice: aiding criminals and demonizing the people actually trying to help.”

Her remarks have not helped her case. Even some liberal commentators have begun to question whether sanctuary policies are being stretched beyond their original purpose — from protecting peaceful undocumented families to shielding criminal operations that exploit immigrants.

The ICE operations in question uncovered shocking levels of abuse in several marijuana grow houses across LA County. These were not typical immigration raids focused on undocumented individuals — they were targeted missions aimed at dismantling organized crime.

One raid in Van Nuys uncovered over 20 undocumented workers living in cramped, unsanitary conditions. Among them were five minors, all under the age of 17, allegedly forced to tend marijuana crops for 12 to 14 hours a day.

ICE agents recovered forged documents, firearms, and over $500,000 in cash. Another raid in East LA resulted in the arrest of a cartel-affiliated individual with known connections to fentanyl distribution.

“These are not isolated incidents,” said Ramirez. “We’re looking at organized criminal rings that exploit immigration loopholes and weak enforcement to run multimillion-dollar operations. These are modern-day slave camps.”

ICE emphasized that the raids were not about deportation quotas or “ripping families apart,” but about tackling abuse, corruption, and exploitation. “These victims need justice,” Ramirez added. “What they don’t need is a city government that ignores their suffering for the sake of political optics.”

The backlash against Bass has been swift and unforgiving. In the hours following ICE’s rebuttal, #BassLied began trending on social media, with thousands of users slamming the mayor for putting politics ahead of public safety.

One viral tweet read, “ICE just exposed the truth. Karen Bass lied to the public, protected criminal gangs, and smeared federal agents. Resign now!”

Talk radio stations across the West Coast lit up with angry callers demanding accountability. Fox News devoted several segments to the story, with commentators demanding that Bass either issue a full apology or step down.

Even moderate Democrats in the state legislature have distanced themselves, issuing carefully worded statements about the “importance of collaboration” in law enforcement.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles residents — many of them immigrants themselves — are beginning to question whether sanctuary status has become more of a political brand than a genuine protective policy.

“I came here legally. I work two jobs. And now I find out my city is hiding child labor camps? That’s not justice,” said Francisco Alvarado, a small business owner in East LA. “ICE did their job. The mayor didn’t.”

While Bass has weathered criticism before, this scandal could prove more damaging than previous controversies. Her insistence on defending her narrative in the face of hard evidence has even some longtime allies concerned.

“There’s a difference between standing for immigrants and obstructing justice,” said one anonymous Democratic city council member. “If more details emerge and they show negligence or deception — the mayor’s credibility is in real trouble.”

Republicans are already using the episode as a campaign weapon. “This is Exhibit A of what happens when woke ideology trumps reality,” said Rep. Mike Garcia (R-CA). “It’s time to end sanctuary insanity.”

Conservative organizations are mobilizing to push for legislation that would punish cities that obstruct federal immigration enforcement, including proposals to withhold federal funding from any municipality proven to have deliberately misled or interfered with agencies like ICE.

The ICE takedown of Karen Bass’s misleading narrative represents more than a clash over immigration policy — it’s a showdown over truth, transparency, and the responsibilities of public officials.

When mayors lie to their citizens to cover political missteps, and when they attempt to protect exploiters under the guise of protecting the exploited, the moral fabric of governance is shredded.

ICE has made its case: these raids were necessary, targeted, and just. And Mayor Bass — by refusing to help and then lying about the facts — has revealed that her priorities lie not with the truth or with victims of human trafficking, but with maintaining a progressive façade that no longer serves the public.
