Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey has openly declared that not even the threat of jail will silence him as he continues to stand up against former President Donald Trump.

Speaking during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Briefing on Thursday, Booker made it clear that he is prepared to face any consequences that might come his way in the fight against what he describes as the harmful actions and tactics of Trump.

During the segment, host Jen Psaki brought up recent comments and attacks from Trump directed at Booker. She asked the senator what message he had for whistleblowers and others who are trying to speak out in the current politically tense environment. Booker responded quickly and firmly with a message of defiance and resilience.

“Stand up and fight,” Booker said when asked what he would tell people in the face of political threats and intimidation. He made it known that he is determined to keep fighting, regardless of Trump’s personal attacks on him. Booker expressed that he doesn’t care if Trump continues to call him out, post negative tweets about him, or even make threats.

Booker mentioned the arrests of various officials in Newark, painting them as part of a broader effort by political opponents to use intimidation tactics against people in his community and political circles.

He pointed out that these arrests seem to target elected officials from Newark, including his own Congresswoman LaMonica McIver and the mayor of Newark. Both had been arrested, which Booker views as an intentional strategy to pressure and silence local leaders.

“We know I’ve had open conversations with senators I never thought I would have because we saw what they’ve done with a congressperson,” Booker said, referring to McIver.

“My Congresswoman LaMonica McIver — arresting her. My mayor — they’ve arrested. They’re picking off, it seems, people that live in Newark that are in elected positions. But I don’t care. Throw me in jail. Do what you have to do. I’m going to continue to stand up for what’s right.”

Booker ended his remarks with a passionate call to action, encouraging more people to join him in speaking up and standing firm against actions they view as attacks on democracy and freedom.

“I’m hoping that when one person stands up and calls this out, it ignites the courage of another person and another person and another person,” he said. Booker emphasized that in times when fundamental rights and democracy are under threat, it is critical for more individuals to find the courage to stand up and push back.

Congresswoman LaMonica McIver’s case has drawn considerable attention. She appeared in court in May after being charged by the Department of Justice for allegedly assaulting ICE agents.

The court hearing was conducted virtually from Washington, D.C., where the judge ordered McIver to surrender her firearms and placed restrictions on her travel, barring her from leaving the United States unless required for official duties. McIver must provide notice to the government if she needs to travel for work-related reasons.

McIver faces serious consequences if convicted, including up to eight years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, according to the New York Post. Fox News reported that McIver has been fundraising to support her legal battle, portraying the charges against her as racially motivated and politically driven.

She has consistently dismissed the charges as purely political, asserting that she was only doing her job during the incident in question.

In an interview with CNN, McIver called the charges “absurd” and criticized the situation, claiming that ICE agents at the scene escalated the confrontation unnecessarily.

“It was very unnecessary,” she said, maintaining that her presence at the New Jersey detention facility was part of her official duties. McIver argued that if performing her job duties results in criminal charges, it reflects a troubling direction for the country. “If I’m going to be charged with a crime for doing my job, it really speaks to where we’re headed in this country,” she added.

Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, Alina Habba, defended the charges against McIver. Habba emphasized that the charges were not politically motivated but were instead about maintaining respect for federal agents.

She told the New York Post that the alleged assault of federal agents by McIver could not be tolerated. “This has nothing to do with congressional oversight, and it has nothing to do with politics.

It’s about respecting those who risk their lives to keep us safe,” Habba stated. Habba is notably recognized for her previous role as President Trump’s personal attorney.

The confrontation between McIver and the ICE agents was captured on video, which appears to show McIver shoving and striking the agents during the incident at a detention facility.

This footage has added another layer of controversy to the case, as opinions are divided on whether McIver’s actions were justified in the context of her responsibilities or crossed a line into illegal behavior.

Booker’s impassioned defense of McIver and other Newark officials underscores a broader concern about what he and others see as the use of law enforcement and legal proceedings to intimidate and suppress political opposition.

By stating his willingness to be jailed if necessary, Booker is positioning himself as a leading voice against what he views as an assault on democratic principles under Trump’s influence.

Throughout his remarks, Booker emphasized the importance of collective action and solidarity in the face of what he calls authoritarian tactics. He is calling on other leaders, citizens, and whistleblowers not to be silenced by fear or threats. His message is clear: when democracy is under attack, it is not enough for one person to stand up — it requires many people joining together to defend it.

The unfolding situation with McIver’s legal troubles and Booker’s vocal opposition has sparked conversations about political freedoms, the role of federal law enforcement, and the boundaries of congressional oversight.

Critics of the charges against McIver argue that they are an example of political targeting, especially given the heated national debates over immigration enforcement and federal authority.

At the same time, supporters of the DOJ’s actions maintain that elected officials are not above the law and that assaulting federal agents is a serious offense that must be addressed regardless of the individual’s position or intentions.

The tension between these viewpoints reflects the broader polarization in American politics today. For Booker, the stakes are clear. He sees the arrests of McIver and Newark’s mayor as part of a concerted effort to intimidate leaders who stand up to Trump and his allies. His willingness to risk arrest himself sends a strong message about his commitment to fighting back against what he perceives as abuses of power.

As the legal case against McIver progresses, it will undoubtedly remain in the public eye, especially with prominent figures like Booker bringing national attention to the issue.

The political implications could extend beyond New Jersey, influencing debates on civil rights, the limits of federal power, and the responsibilities of elected officials when confronting policies and actions they oppose.

In the meantime, Booker continues to call for courage and collective resistance. His statements on MSNBC serve as a rallying cry for those who feel that their rights and freedoms are in jeopardy under the current political climate.

Whether others will heed his call and join him in this fight remains to be seen, but Booker’s message is loud and clear: he will not back down, no matter the personal cost.
