NYPD Officers Pay Tribute to Fallen Colleague in Park Ave Shooting Tragedy

In an emotional tribute on Thursday, New York Police Department (NYPD) officers, city dignitaries, and a grieving community came together to honor Officer Didarul Islam, who was tragically killed during a deadly shooting on Park Avenue earlier this week.

Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh, was one of four victims who lost their lives in a violent rampage inside a Midtown Manhattan office building.

The tragic event, which unfolded on Monday evening, has left a city mourning the loss of one of its finest officers. Islam’s sacrifice and the selflessness he displayed in the face of danger are now etched into the memories of his fellow officers, friends, and family members.

The funeral service, held at Parkchester Jame Masjid in the Bronx, saw hundreds of officers, family, and community members gathering to say their final goodbyes to a beloved officer who had dedicated his life to serving others.

“Though my heart is broken, I find comfort knowing that his sacrifice may have saved others in that lobby,” the message read. “People who are able to go home to their families that day.

I want to thank the NYPD and our entire community for standing beside us. The NYPD is a vital part of the city,” she continued.

Islam leaves behind not only his wife but two young sons who now face life without their father. His wife’s words, filled with a mixture of sorrow and profound gratitude, underscored the sacrifices made by those who serve as officers of the law and the heavy toll such sacrifices exact on their families.

His assignment to a Bronx precinct was where he lived with his wife and two sons, further solidifying his commitment to his community both as an officer and as a father.

During the service, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch honored Islam posthumously by promoting him to Detective First Grade, one of the highest honors within the department. "Detective first grade is one of this department's most respected honors. 

It is a symbol of trust, of excellence, and the kind of judgment that others depend on," Tisch said during the ceremony.

"And while Detective First Grade Didarul Islam didn’t have the time to walk the full path, he embodied those qualities and more: steadiness, selflessness, and a commitment to serve the night that he was killed."

Islam’s promotion was a recognition of his excellence as a police officer and his ability to earn the respect of his fellow officers, supervisors, and the community he served.

Though his life was cut tragically short, his legacy will be defined by the values he embodied—dedication to his job, commitment to justice, and an unwavering desire to protect those in need.

The promotion was not only a tribute to his dedication but a reminder of the sacrifices made by officers in the line of duty every day.

The details surrounding the shooting that led to Islam’s death are still under investigation, but authorities have identified the gunman as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas resident with a history of mental health issues.

Tamura reportedly entered the office building located on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, where he opened fire in the lobby before moving to another floor.

 The chaotic scene escalated when Tamura turned the gun on himself.

In total, four lives were lost in the attack, including Officer Islam’s. Islam, who was off-duty at the time, was working security for the building.

When the shooting began, Islam, despite not being in uniform, immediately sprang into action, trying to protect those around him. His heroic efforts, although not enough to prevent his death, likely saved countless lives by his quick thinking and willingness to intervene in a dangerous situation.

The office building in which the shooting occurred housed several prominent companies, including Blackstone, a global investment firm, and the NFL headquarters.

The incident has raised concerns about safety in office buildings and public spaces, prompting calls for better security measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

In the days following Islam’s death, the city of New York came together to honor the fallen officer.

NYPD Commissioner Tisch and other high-ranking officials attended the funeral to pay their respects, alongside New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a former NYPD officer himself.

Adams, visibly shaken by the tragedy, met with Islam’s family and offered words of comfort, describing Islam as the embodiment of everything New York stands for.

"Didarul Islam embodies what this city is all about," Mayor Adams said. "He’s a true blue New Yorker, not only in the uniform he wore but in the way he carried himself, in the way he loved this city, and the way he served his community."

The mayor’s words were a reflection of the deep admiration Islam earned through his service to the city, and they highlighted the extraordinary commitment of law enforcement officers who dedicate their lives to protecting others, even in the face of unimaginable danger.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also attended the funeral, offering her condolences and paying tribute to Islam’s sacrifice.
